Twins of the Month: Aidan and Finlay

IMG_1178This month we meet Julie Sherman’s twins Aidan and Finlay.

Twins Names?  Aidan and Finlay

Age? 4 years old.

Birthday? 10th December (2010)

Identical or fraternal?  Fraternal

Favourite activity? Singing  (Aidan) and dancing (Finlay) – and anything requiring loads of energy!

A bit about Mum & Dad… We’ve been together 15 years. Met in a dodgy club in Clapham and then spent 2 years apart whilst mum was volunteering in Africa!

Buggy? We started off with an i-Candy Peach Twin – which was gorgeous but didn’t last long with big boys! Moved onto a second hand Nipper 360 and finally a Phil & Teds Sport, which I gave away to another twin mum)

Car? Finally part-exchanged our very unsuitable (and un-economical) Audi S4 for a Qashqai +2, and enjoying all the extra space!

Help or not? I had a birth doula and then a trainee doula who came in to help me out for around 7 months (as no family around to help out). She originally came in a couple of days a week, helping me with breastfeeding and making sure I had lunch –  but then just for the odd few hours to give me a break.

Quick tip for other twin/triplet mums? Don’t be afraid to ask for help and accept it from anyone who offers it.

What advice would you give your pre-twins (pregnant) self? Accept that you may not have the birth you want, or be the parent you think you’ll be but that it is ok to simply do your best. There is no such thing as the perfect (twin) mother!

What advice would you give about sleep training? We had a sleep nanny come in when the boys were around 5.5 months and tweak our routine and it changed our lives! This may not be for everyone, but for me/us it was important to regain some control and feel some sense of organisation amongst the chaos.

What advice would you give about breast/bottle feeding? Do what you can. I struggled through with breastfeeding for 6 months, with pumping inbetween to allow me some freedom, but it was SO hard – and painful – at times. Go with what is best for YOU – your babies will be fine whatever the choice.

Do you have any advice on weaning? Not really – except again not to succumb to pressure to do anything. I was keen to do baby-led weaning. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t, but in the end what worked best for us was a combination of baby-led and purees.

Do you have any advice on potty training? Don’t feel you have to rush into this and again, do what works for you. Also, don’t be too disheartened if you think you’ve cracked it and then one or more regresses… won’t last forever

Best bargain? A huge toybox I bought on e-bay for 99p and was for sale by a woman just across the road from me, so didn’t even have to pay postage!

Best thing about having twins? Almost every hour of every day they do something that gives me utter joy and that reminds me how lucky we are to have them, despite the many challenges!

Funniest thing the twins have done?  Gosh, where do I start? I always find it hilarious ‘though when they come out of their room in the morning dressed in one of their costumes – spiderman, powerranger, skeleton, spider, ninja, knight, fireman……we never know what to expect next!

I love Twickenham Twins’ Club because… although I haven’t participated in as many of the groups and activities as I would have liked -, it’s always a pleasure to catch up with other multiple mums (and dads) – especially those who have older boys – so I can get a glimpse of what the future might hold!
