Twins of the Month: Max and Charlotte

maxandcharlotteThis month we meet Julie Murphy’s twins, Max and Charlotte.

Twins’ Names? Max and Charlotte

Birthday? 31 December 2010 (Hogmannay!)

Identical or fraternal? Fraternal

Favourite activity? The twins have a very busy social life and they love going to lots of classes. Their favourites are swimming, ballet, gym and drama.

A bit about Mum & Dad… Julie is a single mum and is originally from Scotland. Despite being in London for almost 20 years now she still hasn’t lost her accent! The children’s father also lives in London and sees the twins every other weekend.

Older/younger siblings? None

Buggy? Not needed now but I loved my Out ‘n’ About Nipper 360!

Car? Currently a Lexus but will swap it for a more family-friendly car soon!

Help or not? All the twins’ aunties from Scotland came and did a week each in the first few months. There was a knock on the door each Sunday night and a different aunty would appear and stay for a week. We now call them the Fairy Godmothers. After that we had a nanny two days a week from the age of around 6 – 12 months.

Quick tip for other twin/triplet mums? I think its very hard not to become overwhelmed in the first few months, but for me getting the twins in the buggy and getting out of the house really made all the difference. Plus if you have a side-by-side buggy the bonus is that old ladies and/or complete strangers stop and chat to tell you how lovely your babies are – good if you need a boost that day!

What advice would you give your pre-twins/triplets (pregnant) self? Give yourself as much maternity leave as you can and use it to relax: don’t feel guilty about sitting with your feet up… it’s the last chance you’ll get for a while!

What advice would you give about sleep training? Start as you mean to go on! We got the babies in to a routine by about 3 weeks and that really helped in that they were going to bed at 7pm on the dot each night for the first year or so. We could put them down, say night-night and leave them to nod off. However, that all changed when we moved house and gave them some ‘settling in’ time in the new place. They never did settle in and bedtimes were never as easy again!

What advice would you give about breast/bottle feeding? Do what’s best for you and don’t feel guilty about whatever you decide. After initially being reluctant to bottle feed I ended up doing both which worked out well as they started to sleep better through the night after a big bottle at bedtime.

Do you have any advice on weaning? I got a Beaba Babycook Steamer/Blender which made the whole process a lot easier.

Do you have any advice on potty training? Get lots of potty books and a potty and let the kids get used to both. The twins loved reading about boys and girls with big boy/girl pants! I then did one at a time for potty training partly because one was more ready than the other and also because doing two at once meant too much washing! Once one was trained the other wanted to have big boy/girl pants too so it wasn’t too bad!

Best bargain? I use my Tamba discount a lot particularly for the 20% off JoJo Maman Bebe.

Best thing about having twins? Having a boy and girl and watching them grow and develop each day in their own different ways is simply amazing.

Funniest thing the twins have done? They tell each other (very unfunny) made-up Knock Knock jokes and laugh hysterically at the answers.

I love Twickenham Twins’ Club because… The Wednesday playgroup was a life-saver for me when I first moved to Twickenham two years ago and through that I have met lots of lovely twin mums who are now good friends.
